Lima Declaration closes CAPLAC III, attended by political and conservation leaders

Caribbean and Latin American conservation voices were raised and heard during CAPLAC III. By the close, these voices had been distilled into the Lima Declaration, ready for the IUCN World Conservation Congress in June 2020.

INSPIRING PEOPLE

Dr Robert Wallace, innovator in biodiversity and conservation, wins the 2019 Kenton Miller Award

Dr Wallace's seminal research on Bolivia's spider monkeys led to pioneering research on jaguars, Andean bears, condors, giant otters and other species. He has taken public engagement in new directions: a new Bolivian gastronomic movement supporting conservation through Bolivia's culinary heritage, and a popular social media movement centred on the Madidi National Park.

Recognition and reward for five outstanding conservationists, at Lima CAPLAC III

In this article we highlight five champions of protected areas, who were presented with the Packard Award by the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas at a ceremony in Peru during the third Latin American and Caribbean Protected Areas Congress.

Celsa Ortiz, the first female ranger in the Yanesha Communal Reserve, Peru

Away from the busy CAPLAC III events in the capital of Lima, Celsa works steadily as the first, and so far only, female ranger in the Communal Reserve. She supports the IUCN Green List approach for the Yanesha Communal Reserve and the surrounding cultural landscape.

On Lima's doorstep, a Peru Sea Lion colony turnaround, and new Green List commitments

Fur seals had been annihilated for their skins and their perceived, and unfounded, impact on fisheries. Fishing interests previously opposed the declaration of marine protected areas. Now Peru is moving to protect marine areas and adopt Green List standards, and the fishing industry is gradually committing to conservation.

CAPLAC III provided space that was well used by the Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme, implemented by UNDP, which contributed to multiple side events on Indigenous and Community-Conserved Territories and Areas.

Governance makes its mark on Seychelles Locally Managed Marine Areas project

The national component of an exciting new regional project coordinated by IUCN called "Enhancing coastal and marine socio-ecological resilience and biodiversity conservation in the Western Indian Ocean,” has just been launched in the Seychelles.

IUCN GREEN LIST

Celebrating Latin American and Caribbean Commitments to Green List Success

Peru, Mexico and Colombia achieve Green List success, and are recognised with awards; new countries, including Costa Rica, Chile, and Jamaica commit to use the Standard to improve the performance of their protected and conserved areas; and new partners, led by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Andes-Amazon Initiative, align programmes and resources to the Green List. All at CAPLAC III.

IUCN planning and evaluation frameworks guide significant species conservation on Australian indigenous lands

Like many Indigenous groups around the world, a team of Arakwal (Byron Bay, Australia) Traditional Owners, park managers and scientists have adapted IUCN species conservation planning and Green List evaluation frameworks to help carry significant values in cross-cultural settings.

BIOPAMA

Promoting knowledge and actions for a protected planet in the Caribbean

The BIOPAMA Programme is currently operating in Africa, fifteen Caribbean nations, and the Pacific region. Thirteen countries were represented at CAPLAC III, participating in a biodiversity and protected area management panel discussion.

IUCN and RCMRD formalise their partnership for the BIOPAMA Regional Resource Hub

Under the Biodiversity and Protected Area Management (BIOPAMA) Programme, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) and IUCN have signed an implementation agreement for the development of a Regional Resource Hub.

New technologies in protected areas

Protected areas must use the digital revolution to their advantage. Adaptable new technologies are booming, fast connectivity is available and becoming cheaper. The new MOOC TECH will introduce these technologies applied to current conservation, and new uses in the field.

WORLD HERITAGE

World Heritage as an indicator of protected areas’ success: the case of Latin America and the Caribbean

As the global conservation community rallies around a common ambition – to assess the level of achievement of Aichi Targets and define the post-2020 agenda for biodiversity – the IUCN World Heritage Outlook emerges as a useful indicator of the effectiveness of protected areas. CAPLAC III provided a springboard for measurement at the regional level.

The Guidelines for Privately Protected Areas, Spanish version, was released at CAPLAC III

The Guidelines provide instruction from field experience on how best to manage, govern, evaluate and conserve PPAs individually, and be contributors to conservation in a national and global sense.
