Azerbaijan announced it will restore 170,000 hectares of degraded lands by 2030 – and an additional 100,000 hectares conditional upon receiving funding – becoming the latest country to pledge to the Bonn Challenge. 

This year, the Lake Geneva Forestry Forum (Forum Forestier Lémanique) was co-hosted by IUCN and Vaud Canton in Switzerland. Collectively, we learned that be it in Uganda, Switzerland or France, challenges and strategies for managing forest reserves tend to look much the same.

In partnership with IUCN, Winrock scientists used data from over 300 published papers to model tree growth for planted forests, natural regeneration, agroforestry and mangrove restoration around the world. These growth rates were converted into carbon dioxide removal rates, assigned to specific geographies and made publicly available in a database available on InfoFLr.org, backed up by an accompanying peer-reviewed publication.

A new online tool called the FLR Carbon Storage Calculator is now available. Users need only to enter the location and total area of their restoration work to get an estimate of the carbon sequestration impact.
