The Transforming Eastern Province through Adaptation project will be jointly implemented by IUCN in collaboration with the Government of Rwanda through Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) and Enabel, the Belgian development agency, as Executing Entities.

Rwanda's story id one of the success stories shared at the 5th African Forest Landscape Restoration AFR Annual Partnership meeting which took place in Kigali in May 2021, bringing together forest experts to discuss the 100 million hectares Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Africa by 2030.

The Government of Rwanda will in March 2022 host the inaugural IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC) to discuss conservation of the continent’s protected areas. This comes after the relaunch of APAC in Kigali, Rwanda on 20th April 2021

Rwanda has signed an agreement with Rwanda Forestry Authority for Forests and Landscape Restoration in Nyagatare, Kirehe, and Kayonza Districts in the Eastern Province of Rwanda.

Rwanda is among the fastest-growing countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Even with fast economic expansion, over 70% of the population makes a living from subsistence agriculture and natural resources like forests and rivers.

In May 2021, IUCN Rwanda joined Rwanda Government to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity celebrated unnder the theme “We are part of the solution for nature”.

Embedding Integrated Water Resource Management in Rwanda (EWMR) is a three-year project that is designed to increase livelihood and conservation benefits in Sebeya and other catchments through participatory community approaches.The project runs between 2019 - 2022

Embedding Integrated Water Resource Management in Rwanda (EWMR) project is helping to restore about 18,000 hectares that used to be at risk of soil erosion around Sebeya River catchment through afforestation, dams’ creation, trenches’ digging, promotion of agroforestry among others.

Since 2019, the Embedding Water Resources Management in Rwanda Project has been using a community centered approach to restore landscapes in the upper Sebeya River.

Rwanda Water Resources Board in collaboration with IUCN organised two consultation meetings for Mukungwa and Akagera low catchment in Rwanda with the overall objective to jointly identify challenges, solutions and opportunities to enhance integrated catchment management in Rwanda.

Rwanda’s Water Resources Management Plan (IWRM, 2017) identifies gender as a cross cutting theme of prime importance, women being 52.5% of the total Rwandan population and key actors in water usage, supply and management.

Through the ‘Embedding Integrated Water Resources Management’ project in Rwanda residents from Rubavu, Rutsiro, Ngororero and Nyabihu districts have received 475 cows to support in improving their families’ livelihoods.
