Conservationists have long warned about the connection between the health of people and that of nature. HIV, the Spanish flu and Ebola were among the most frightening words in the list of zoonoses for a while, until COVID-19 unfortunately took over this year. Corona has brought attention to the threats that we incur if we do not keep our ecosystems healthy. It has also cast light on the critical role of protected areas in keeping people and nature in a harmonious and balanced relationship. Here are three inspiring solutions that show how a diversity of mechanisms, partnerships and practices can sustainably combine human well-being with ecological conservation: Brazil, Kenya and China.
