One of the many casualties of the coronavirus pandemic has been our wildlife. Due to the unprecedented pressure COVID-19 has placed on conservation, we have asked some grantees across all our initiatives to tell us how the pandemic has impacted the species they work with and their conservation activities. In the videos below, they share their experiences straight from the field. Lockdown restrictions and various worldwide safety protocols have now left many threatened species exposed to poaching and other dangers. Conservationists have simply not been able to keep an eye on species as they once did. As a result, there is a very real risk that we could lose decades of progress and conservation successes.
In an effort to fight against these extraordinary circumstances, IUCN Save Our Species has launched two Calls for Proposals for Rapid Action Grants as part of the SOS African Wildlife initiative, funded by the European Union. These grants are meant to address any urgent conservation needs brought about by the pandemic across Sub-Saharan Africa (including South Africa) and Madagascar. Currently, 18 COVID-19 Rapid Action Grants are active. |
