The Regional Resource Hub for Eastern and Southern Africa, hosted by the Regional Centre for Mapping Resources for Development (RCMRD) held consultations with key actors to define its mission, in line with the protected area priorities of the countries it serves. Coordinating knowledge sharing at intra-national and regional level, and developing knowledge products that support better decisions were among the key needs identified.

Key stakeholders in the ministries responsible for the environment and fisheries in Samoa and Vanuatu received trainings that enhanced their capacity to produce basic maps and use the GIS. The newly acquired skills will allow staff to make full use of the Pacific Islands Protected Area Portal (PIPAP) and assist with mapping of boundaries for the protected and conserved areas within their jurisdiction.

Mikhail Padonou first enrolled in the PAPACO MOOCs in 2018, as he endeavoured to sharpen his conservation skills. After completing several MOOCs, including the one on Ecological Monitoring, he was offered a job to do exactly that, ecological monitoring in the Mono Transfontier Biosphere Reserve. Since the beginning of the current sessions in February, over 8,000 students have enrolled in PAPACO MOOCs. You can be the next success story!
