‘Knowledge brokering’ in marine protected areas (MPAs)

There are thousands of marine protected areas worldwide however, a majority of them don’t achieve their objectives. Many would benefit from being connected to peers who have solved similar challenges.

The SEA Success initiative, implemented through a collaboration between IUCN and OCTO under UNDP’s Ocean Innovation Challenge, has piloted a new knowledge exchange approach, providing targeted matchmaking between MPA challenges and knowledge holders, offering a tailored approach to meet the unique needs of each site.

SEA Success was piloted in Thailand and Bangladesh.

Peer-to-peer exchange for species conservation across Africa

What can wildlife conservation organisations and practitioners learn from each other that would advance species conservation?

Recently, 38 African organisations who are all grantees under the IUCN SOS African Wildlife Initiative, came together to assess their achievements and challenges through peer-to-peer learning, best practice sharing, and documenting their solutions in species conservation.

How to save the critically endangered Formosan landlocked salmon

The Formosan landlocked salmon (Oncorhynchus masou formosanus) is a critically endangered species, native to high-altitude cold streams in Taiwan. This ice age relic faced severe population declines in the 20th century due to habitat loss from highland agriculture, human development, and climate change. Declared as endangered in Taiwan in 1989, the Salmon is also categorized as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.

In response, Shei-Pa National Park launched a conservation program, utilizing artificial breeding, habitat restoration, and other in-situ and ex-situ strategies. Over three decades, these efforts have successfully increased the population to over 10,000, reintroducing the species to previously lost habitats.

We play! We plant! - One goal, 100 trees

One Goal, 100 Trees is an inspiring initiative from Tanzania, blending the excitement of football with environmental restoration. For every goal scored, a commitment is made to planting 100 trees, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among youth.

The approach combines several key components: partnerships with universities and football clubs to maximize outreach, collaborations with environmental organizations for technical guidance, and detailed landscape assessments to ensure suitable tree species and sustainable restoration. By tackling deforestation, drought, and biodiversity loss, the campaign raises climate awareness while promoting teamwork and responsibility.

Shared through the restoration community, Nourish Africa demonstrates the power of sport to drive conservation. Let’s us inspire communities worldwide to replicate this impactful concept! #WePlayWePlant #GenerationRestoration
