PANORAMA promotes specific, replicable solutions for a healthy planet, currently featuring almost 1,500 case studies from over 1,000 contributors from around the world. By supporting global learning through local solutions, PANORAMA helps ensure that nature conservation and sustainable development actions build on “what works”.

In 2014 the IUCN World Parks Congress was held under the theme of “Parks, People, Planet: Inspiring Solutions,” Through the GIZ-led project Blue Solutions, a solution case study template was developed and a portfolio of good practices in marine and coastal conservation was built up. These are the origins of PANORAMA, which has since grown into a multi-partner, multi-theme and widely recognized knowledge exchange initiative.

In March, the PANORAMA initiative proudly unveiled its revamped web platform, designed to foster streamlined knowledge discovery, enhance inclusivity and deepen peer connectivity. The PANORAMA web platform serves as the primary gateway for users to access a wealth of solutions. The previous PANORAMA platform has received more than a million visits since its launch in 2016.

The newly launched web platform introduces several key enhancements aimed at improving user experience and increasing the visibility of contributions. With a dynamic map tool and enhanced filtering options based on thematic groups and geographical regions, users can now navigate solutions more intuitively, discovering relevant case studies with ease.

We are proud to announce that the cumulative visitor-count of the PANORAMA web platform since 2016 had surpassed the one-million mark by the end of 2023, reaching an impressive 1,021,459 visits. The platform continued to attract a growing global audience last year reaching a total of 241,066 visits and 424,816 page views. Around 200,000 unique visitors came to the platform in 2023. Furthermore, 194 new solutions were published over the course of the year, ranging from the Provision Electric Vehicles in Yellowstone National Park to the measuring of ecosystem services at landscape level in Central America.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games have just come to an end and the paralympic games are about to begin soon, in Paris but what does that have to do with nature conservation?

Through the Sports for Nature (S4N) initiative, many countries and organisations have committed to employ the popularity of sports to promote healthy solutions for sports, nature and people. Some of these solutions are now profiled on the PANORAMA platform, including one on the Paris 2024 Olympic games.

PANORAMA promotes solutions across multiple, inter-linked Communities. From nature-culture interlinkages to species conservation, each Community promotes specific solutions on a dedicated topic. Below are recent highlights from some of our PANORAMA Communities.

One of PANORAMA’s 11 Communities, or thematic areas, focuses on biodiversity-friendly agriculture, a topic of great global relevance. This Community has been running since 2017 and currently includes over 260 Solution case studies and hundreds of active community members. Solutions range from modern beekeepers who work on reviving ancient local wisdom to mobile apps that connect rural farmers with urban consumers.

We are currently inviting expressions of interest from organizations working on this topic to take a role in coordinating this Community, moving forward. It can provide a forum to profile success stories from your work and that of your partners, providing great global visibility and a platform for exchange and learning. It would also allow your organization to be part of a long-standing, recognized global initiative, collaborating with 12 other reputable institutions.

APOPO, a Belgian NGO headquartered in Morogoro, Tanzania, trains African giant pouched rats, Cricetomys ansorgei, for scent detection purposes. Over the past 25 years, the organization has deployed rats in former conflict zones to use their incredible sense of smell for the detection of landmines and other explosives. In addition, these rats also help detect tuberculosis in patient samples. Building on this knowledge, APOPO started to train the rodents to detect illegally trafficked wildlife in shipping containers and other applicable environments.

Since January 2024, the PANORAMA Cities Community has featured over 10 new innovative Solutions that showcase global contributions to sustainable urban development. One of the most relevant and prominent case studies on the platform is "Programa Ambiental y de Cambio Climático de la Ciudad de México: revegetación del campo y la ciudad," prepared by the Environmental Department of Mexico City.

This comprehensive solution addresses the disproportionate growth of Mexico City, which has led to environmental degradation, pollution, and vulnerability to climate change. Implemented as part of the Mexico City Environmental and Climate Change Programme (PACC) 2019-2024, it aims to improve ecological conditions and reduce environmental impacts through seven key axes: revegetation, river and water body rescue, sustainable water management, zero waste, integrated and sustainable mobility, air quality, and the promotion of solar energy.

The implementation of the PACC has involved carrying out different programs, such as the Green Challenge, Sowing Parks, the Altépetl Program, the Special Program of the Green Infrastructure Network (PERIVE), Gardens for Life and Rainwater Harvesting.

In June 2024, the Restoration Academy brought together a diverse group of stakeholders—including NGOs, governments, indigenous organizations, and farmers' cooperatives— from over 16 African countries to share knowledge and learn about the latest developments and actions of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

During the Academy, PANORAMA was introduced in-depth as a key platform for sharing solutions in the field of ecosystem restoration. GIZ currently offers individual writing support to selected Restoration Academy alumni.

PANORAMA - Solutions for a Healthy Planet is a collaborative initiative that documents and promotes instances of innovative, repeatable solutions in a variety of conservation and sustainable development subjects, allowing for cross-sectoral learning and inspiration. PANORAMA enables practitioners to share and reflect on their experiences, gain recognition for their achievements, and learn from their colleagues about how comparable difficulties have been managed throughout the world.
