Applications for the SSC Internal Grants are open until 26 February 2024

The grant aims to encourage and promote activities of the SSC Groups that contribute to the Species Conservation Cycle, through the allocation of funds between USD 2,000 - 3,500 for those projects to be undertaken between 2023 and 2024.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is open for grant applications until 29 February 2024

This Fund provides targeted grants to individual species conservation initiatives for all plant, animal and fungal species. The Fund uses the IUCN Red List as the primary guide to the conservation status of a given species.

Rainforest Trust Support, deadline 1 March 2024

Feasibility Awards and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards to assess the potential for creating or expanding protected or conserved areas. These awards are intended to address specific information gaps in conservation projects.

Fondation Segré Conservation Action Fund calls for applications now open until 4 April 2024

The Fondation Segré Conservation Action Fund launched new calls for proposals focusing on globally threatened ungulate species. This initiative will support young and early researchers as well as conservation projects with two different grants Conservation Action Grants (maximum EUR 50,000) and Research Support Grants (maximum EUR 7,000)

Open Call: Expressions of Interest for Seascape Restoration Grant, deadline 30 April 2024

The Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme has opened a call for expressions of interest (EoI) for Seascape Restoration Grants within European regional seas. The dedicated seascapes funding will support projects that aim to restore degraded seascapes, making them richer in biodiversity and more resilient to climate change and other pressures.

Applications for the CLUB300 - Bird Protection Fund are accepted until 31 July 31 2024

This fund is focused on supporting projects with birds listed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Extinct in the Wild (EW) or Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The maximum annual amount granted to a single project is USD 5,000.

The BIAZA Awards call for applications is open until 25 February 2024

BIAZA Awards provide an opportunity for you to have your achievements recognised within the zoo and aquarium community. Incorporating a range of categories, you have the chance to achieve Winner or Runner-Up and demonstrate BIAZA best practice and excellence in your field of work. BIAZA members (including associate members) are invited to submit award applications.

Opportunities through the Indianapolis Zoo

2025 Indianapolis Prize Nomination, deadline 26 February 2024

The Indianapolis Prize is an initiative that would approach the issue of animal conservation in a whole new way by combining significant financial support with programs that build emotional and intellectual support. The Indianapolis Prize awards $250,000.

2025 Emerging Conservationist Application, deadline 26 February 2024

Applications will be accepted for the 2025 Emerging Conservationist, an award which supports conservationists under 40 years of age with the talent and determination to make a significant impact on saving an animal species or group of species. This individual will receive a $50,000 monetary award to further their conservation work. This award is made possible through a grant from the Kobe Foundation.

SSC Internal Grant Results

COMMUNICATE - Cave Invertebrate Specialist Group has a website!

The group has developed and launched the website early this year to develop a virtual library (catalogue) of publications within the website which would be available to members and serve as a focal point for relevant topic-related research and conservation literature. The website would benefit the Group itself, giving exposure, and raising awareness of these species.

SSC - EDGE Internal Grant Results

Assessment of the palm Parajubaea torallyi, endemic to Bolivia

The IUCN SSC Palm Specialist Group assessed the status of the Parajubaea torallyi palm, endemic to Bolivia. The project conducted fieldwork to identify the threats affecting the populations of Parajubaea torallyi and to establish contacts with local stakeholders ranging from municipal authorities, and communities to academia.

The Group found that forest fires (arson or accidental) are the main source of threats to this endemic palm, especially in the protected area of El Palmar. But also the direct extraction of leaves, the construction of roads through the palm groves of this species for local development purposes, and the development of sites for agricultural production. As part of the results, the group generated a protocol that can be replicated in botanical gardens, in situ regeneration programs, and advised the local government to establish municipal protected areas that facilitate the management and conservation of the palm groves. Installation of rapid assessments on population structure for a new Parajubaea species in the municipality of El Villar and endemic to Bolivia to obtain biological and ecological information.
