As 2023 draws to a close, we proudly present the CEESP Midterm report, highlighting our collective progress since the IUCN Congress. This period has seen significant growth and transformative initiatives, reinforcing our commitment to reshaping conservation across our focus areas. As stewards of the planet, we reflect on our shared responsibility to safeguard it for future generations.

A Unique Coexistence of an Indigenous Tribe (Adivasi) with Tigers in the Western Ghats of India

In the Biligiri Hills of Karnataka in India, the Soligas have been successfully living within a wildlife sanctuary (tigers, elephants, etc.) for centuries. The stories and values from this community serve as important lessons for reimagining conservation.

Survey Sign-up: Indigenous Kinship Circle in the Northern Great Plains

The Indigenous Kinship Circle (IKC) is conducting a study for Indigenous people from the Northern Great Plains to center their social and environmental priorities in conservation planning from the local to the international level.

Reimagining Conservation: Dispatches from the First Asian Rangers Forum, Assam, India

The first Asian Ranger Forum was a dynamic brainstorming to reimagine conservation: how to centre rangers in global conservation conversations; repositioning rangers as essential planetary health professionals; broadening the definition of rangers as local and Indigenous, men and women; and building trust between rangers and communities. We look forward to building on this momentum with the new Ranger Federation of Asia president Bunty Tao.

The IUCN Mexican Forum "Roots of territorial sustainability of the peoples of Mexico" has been an invaluable space for exchange, since it allowed bringing together Indigenous leaders, experts, professionals, and people committed to the advancement of sustainable practices in the Mexican territory.

El Foro Mexicano de la UICN “Raíces de la sustentabilidad territorial de los pueblos de México”, el cual, sin duda alguna, ha sido un espacio de intercambio invaluable, ya que permitió reunir a líderes, expertos, profesionales y personas comprometidas con el avance de las prácticas sustentables en el territorio mexicano.

3rd Interinstitutional Seminar on Green Criminology in Mexico

The 3rd Interinstitutional Seminar on Green Criminology in Mexico will provide a space for interdisciplinary reflection on socio-environmental conflicts and problems from the perspective of green criminology, taking into consideration both the national and international context and the participation of members of all sectors of society.

El 3er Seminario Interinstitucional de Criminología Verde en México brindará un espacio de reflexión, desde la interdisciplina, sobre los conflictos y problemáticas socio ambientales desde la perspectiva de la criminología verde, tomando en consideración tanto el contexto nacional como el internacional, y la participación de integrantes de todos los sectores de la sociedad.

5-Dimensional Sustainability Assessment Framework (5DSAF)

A new tool is being piloted by IUCN Sustainable Use and Livelihoods (SULi), IIED, and other partners to bring a more rounded approach to assessing sustainability concerning the use of wild species. The tool expands sustainability's conventional ecological, economic, and social dimensions – adding animal welfare and human health considerations.

NEW! CEESP welcomes our first-ever Young Professional Regional Focal Points

Young Professional (YP) Regional Focal Points for IUCN CEESP are individuals with a deep interest and drive to help the activities of CEESP and enhance youth engagement in current topics. This network of YPs (18-35) will play an integral part in engagement in their region, with a focus on youth and young professionals' involvement. Reporting to the Regional and Deputy Vice Chair of their region, they will prioritize regional CEESP initiatives while facilitating communication and coordination within the region.

Commission Membership Experience Survey

IUCN Commissions are committed to improving our interaction and engagement with you, our members. To help inform how Commissions work, we urge you to please take part in the first of an annual member experience survey. Your valuable input will be used to improve and plan future Commission membership initiatives. The survey takes about ten minutes to complete the survey, and your valuable input will be used to improve and plan our future work to better support Commissions.
