Dear State Members of IUCN, It is with great pleasure that I write to invite you to consider hosting the next IUCN World Conservation Congress, the world’s premier conservation event, scheduled to take place in 2025. Every four years, the IUCN Congress brings top scientists and academics together with decision makers from governments, civil society, indigenous peoples and business. They debate and commit to act upon the latest in conservation and sustainable development, with a view to influence the international sustainability agenda. Hosting the IUCN World Conservation Congress provides a unique opportunity for a country and city to demonstrate its leadership on global environmental and sustainability issues. It enables the hosts to showcase national and local conservation programmes and activities, and their linkages to other sectors of government and the economy. The host government and host city can use the Congress as a vehicle to launch national or local campaigns on nature-related issues to mobilise civil society, businesses and government agencies around key sustainability challenges. In addition, host countries can use the Congress to drive the international environmental agenda by rallying global leaders at the Congress to launch new initiatives or advance existing ones. Additionally, the country’s and city’s biodiversity, history and culture will gain international exposure, and the city will receive recognition as a sustainable event and tourism destination. IUCN accepts proposals from national or subnational governments from any country for phase 1. The high-level requirements for hosting the IUCN World Conservation Congress including information required by interested candidates for this phase 1, as well as the timeline for the full selection process can be found in Annex 1 – ‘Statement of Requirements for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 – Phase 1’. I trust the information in the Statement of requirements, and other Congress-related annexes listed below will lead you to consider joining forces with us to organise the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2025. We remain at your disposal should you require any further information. Should you have any queries, please direct them to: congress@iucn.org. Sincerely, Bruno Oberle IUCN Director General |
