Healthy freshwater ecosystems are essential for biodiversity and human well-being. However, approximately one third of freshwater biodiversity faces extinction, declining at more than twice the rate of terrestrial or marine species. Freshwater biodiversity is one of the seven main themes of this IUCN Congress. There will be dozens of dedicated sessions, speaker pitches and events on freshwater conservation and restoration as well as the effective and sustainable management of water resources on a global scale. The theme of conserving freshwater to sustain life will also have a strong focus on rights and equitable governance. The following reflections from IUCN Members and Partners highlight the mapping of global freshwater biodiversity using eDNA, and the importance of local freshwater management for community wellbeing.
