IUCN has called on governments at UNESCO’s 44th World Heritage Committee meeting to take full account of the contributions of World Heritage sites in addressing biodiversity loss. This call comes ahead of the UN conference on biodiversity scheduled for later this year in China, which will set new goals and targets to safeguard biodiversity over the next decade and beyond through a Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Lésio-Louna Reserve was developed by a partnership between the Republic of Congo and UK-registered charity The Aspinall Foundation. The area was established as a gorilla sanctuary by a decree in 1999, which was repealed and replaced in 2009 by a new decree creating the Réserve Naturelle des Gorilles de Lésio-Louna in its current form. It is managed by a collaboration between The Aspinall Foundation and the Ministry of Forest Economy.

Since 2012, Ninfa Carianil and her husband Rufino patrolled and protected the rainforest of Águila Harpía ProAves Reserve in the Colombian Amazon. They built strong links and relationships with the local community, earning their trust and encouraging their interest in its wildlife and conservation. Community members have helped support Ninfa through two recent personal tragedies: the death of her son, Johan Sebastian in 2019, and the loss of her husband to COVID-19 in 2020.

Since then, Ninfa has continued alone to protect the area from hunters, loggers, and illegal settlers, to conduct monitoring, to build community support, and to inspire young people. Through her dedication and sacrifice, Ninfa has become a local leader and voice for conservation and for Indigenous women in a remote Amazon community.

Sharm El-Mia is a small bay on the outskirts of Sharm El-Sheikh city. Being the main marina for diving and live-aboard boats, the bay suffered from boat effluents that smothered marine life. Relocating the marina presented a chance to restore the afflicted bay. The restoration process, which was carried out through partnership with various stakeholders, set an example of how to successfully coordinate work between actors who in many cases have conflicting interests.

Essentials are short online courses tailor-made for protected area professionals. This month, the Essential Ranger Handbook was launched. It serves as a quick guide that can be kept on your computer as reference, or printed out and distributed to colleagues. One can use it as a reference, as a refresher, or a teaching tool.

Nature Seychelles, supported by its international partners IUCN and the Porini Foundation, have launched the world's first digital species – the Seychelles Magpie Robin ‒ which is being offered for sale as the first ever Digital #NatureCollectible (a non-fungible token for conservation).

"This pioneering use of digital and financial technology can be promoted through a new ‘Green List exchange’ where new ideas and success stories on innovative funding mechanisms can be shared. We will further explore how other Green List protected areas and their supporters can secure new and additional resources," said IUCN's James Hardcastle.

PANORAMA are excited to launch a Facilitation Toolkit on Engaging Practitioners and Fostering Interactive Dialogues. This toolkit provides guidance for the design and facili­tation of workshops for matchmaking, exchange and solution uptake in the context of PANORAMA. It provides examples and insights from our prac­tice. At the same time, most of the guidance and tools offered in this e-book can be applied to other virtual and on-site workshop formats.

These workshop-style meetings, with participants from more than ten countries provided background information on PANORAMA and instruction on the Solution-ing Approach. Fifteen ideas for new solutions were presented and discussed in a diversity of topics including climate change, governance and heritage management. These solutions will be further elaborated by the providers and then published on PANORAMA.  

An additional session for celebrating new solutions on the platform will close this joint effort of intersectoral collaboration within the PANORAMA partnership in August.
