IUCN, the official advisor on nature to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, recommends adding four natural sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger: the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex in Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger, the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region in Albania and North Macedonia, and the Volcanoes of Kamchatka in Russia. IUCN also recommends deleting the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania from the World Heritage List, due to irreversible damage following construction of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project.

As its official advisor on nature, IUCN makes recommendations to the World Heritage Committeeon on all matters related to natural World Heritage, including on new sites proposed for inscription and on action to support sites facing threats. The Committee discusses and makes decisions based on these recommendations.

IUCN's recommendations for 2020 and 2021 have now been released by the UNESCO's World Heritage Centre, in two dispatches on 4 and 21 June 2021.

Dans le cadre de la célébration de la quinzaine nationale de l’environnement en Côte d’Ivoire, le Ministre de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable a inauguré l’écomusée à la suite des travaux de réhabilitation et d’équipements de cette infrastructure par le projet « d’amélioration des infrastructures d’accueil du Parc national du Banco pour le développement de l’écotourisme et l’éducation environnementale dans l’agglomération d’Abidjan » financé par le programme BIOPAMA. Cette visite a permis aussi au Ministre de découvrir le Parc, ses attraits touristiques et les problématiques environnementales auxquelles le parc fait face.

Omar from Diffa, Niger is our latest MOOC Conservation ambassador. He held a meeting at Diffa University on 20 June 2021, to talk about our MOOCs and the benefits of protected area management. He also assisted the students in creating their MOOC Conservation accounts.

These ambassadors are active students who wish to contribute by volunteering their time to assist students encountering difficulties, but especially to manage local networks of protected area and conservation (future) professionals.

As part of the new IUCN Green List development plan, IUCN Global Protected and Conserved Areas Programme (GPAP) and the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) have established a ‘finance working group’ to help mobilise the Green List Standard and programme to support protected areas financing. This theme is a new strategic direction for the development, further implementation and scaling-up of the IUCN Green List by 2030.

Women are as eager as men to contribute to conservation through serving as protected areas Rangers. But the profession is heavily male-dominated, and women globally represent only about 11% of the Ranger workforce.

IMET is a Protected Area Management Effectiveness (PAME) tool that allows an in-depth assessment of marine and terrestrial protected areas, regardless of their management categories and governance type. It is also a decision support tool that helps protected area managers take analysis-based management decisions for improved conservation outcomes.
