Now is the time to rebuild what we have lost. The symbolic launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration ignites us to action. IUCN hears the call. Emboldened by the strength of our Union, we were early advocates for the Decade, building on efforts like the Bonn Challenge, the Nature-based Recovery Initiative, and the Agriculture and Land Health Initiative.

A new demand-responsive technical facility to help countries accelerate forest landscape restoration is on the horizon. IUCN, WRI and WWF are partnering on a fresh approach to help countries implement restoration through the creation the Forest Landscape Restoration Implementation Hub.

The best way to reinforce the universal value of the Global Standard for NbS is for different types of organisations to apply the self-assessment to their own projects. Farmers and farmers’ associations have an outsized impact on landscapes all over the world. We introduced the Global Standard to a select group of representatives from farmers’ organisations to see what they thought about it.

The Stabilising Land Use project sought to improve the governance of natural resources for communities around protected areas in six landscapes across four countries in Africa. At the conclusion of the project, we checked back in with the project teams and community representatives in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana and Uganda to see how things have progressed and what opportunities lie ahead.

What do you picture when you think of biodiversity? Lush forests teeming with birds? Or maybe coral reefs bursting with fish and brightly coloured corals? Now think about a farm as a symbol of biodiversity. Trees on Farms for Biodiversity want people to think differently and consider the potential of farms to strengthen food systems and improve food security for humans and provide habitat security for plants and wildlife. And they are building new tools to support this approach.

Environmental leaders from Ethiopia, Madagascar and Togo strengthen both their resolve and their technical skills on the path to becoming better restoration leaders.
