ON THE WAY TO MARSEILLES

As we prepare to gather at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France this September, we understand that conditions under the COVID-19 pandemic remain difficult for many of us around the world. We encourage you to explore all the options to experience the hybrid Congress. Early bird registration closes down on June 17th, visit here.

The CEC Steering Committee and I are planning the way forward to make way for more collaborative work. We realise that we need to know each other better to improve our internal communication as members of the Commission and as part of the Union. To achieve this,
we invite you to update your profile on the IUCN Portal. We will share updates in the near future about the work we are developing in order to open up new opportunities for you to get involved, as we look to the start of a new mandate. In the meantime, below are key updates and new resources for you to enjoy!
World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, and the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we want to hear YOUR stories. As CEC members, what projects are you working on that are aligned with the goal of urgently restoring our damaged ecosystems? Help us kick-off the celebrations by filling out this form so that we may feature you on CEC channels in the future!

#NatureForAll

The COVID-19 worldwide pandemic changed many facets of our lives in 2020, but it has also amplified the importance of nature connection for all. #NatureForAll is working to build on its role as a facilitator to bring partners together and inspire love and care for nature in the next four years. You can now read the #NatureForAll Annual Report 2020 to find out more about how our almost 500 partners have responded to this past difficult year.

Education for Conservation

As defined in the Strategy on Education for Conservation “Education for Conservation (EfC) refers to diverse approaches and strategies for education and learning that facilitate connection with nature, and that imbibe diverse values, norms, knowledge, and practices consistent with establishing a sustainable way of life in harmony with Nature”.

In line with this approach, CEC participated in the virtual UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), where we hosted an interactive session titled: Influencing change towards sustainability – Nature Based Education. Watch the recording here.

Youth Engagement

An intergenerational approach to youth engagement benefits people of all ages. The first-ever fully virtual IUCN Global Youth Summit took place online April 5-16, 2021. With over 15,000 people registered, 50+ youth-led workshops, and dozens of networking events, the two-week Summit brought thousands of people together interested in the future of nature.

If you missed it, you can view the recordings of the  Opening and Closing Ceremonies and high-level Intergenerational Dialogues from the Summit. The Global Youth Summit Outcomes will be discussed during a hybrid Global Youth Summit gathering on September 3rd and presented to the IUCN Members’ Assembly at the World Conservation Congress in Marseille..
UPCOMING EVENTS
Environmental Leaders Program

This year, the CEC is supporting again the Environmental Leaders Program of the Jane Goodall Institute. Developed to provide knowledge and key tools to generate environmental projects, this edition, only in Spanish, will address guidelines of Environmental Education, design, planning and implementation of projects. Choose between disciplinary contents according to your interests: illegal wildlife trafficking, ecosystem restoration, climate change and updating of Environmental Education legislation. CEC have 100 places for our members, register until June 14th, here.

Model Conference of Parties 2

The second leg of the Model Conference of Parties is scheduled to be held from June 12th, 2021. The conference theme ‘‘Our Solutions are in Nature’ deep dive into the actions needed by all stakeholders to achieve the 2050 goals of the CBD. WWF India will host the digital conference on biodiversity conservation in partnership with MoEF&CC, NBA (National Biodiversity Authority of India), CBD (Convention for Biological Diversity), UNEP, UNDP & IUCN-CEC. Dr. Alex Zavarzin, Regional Vice Chair for IUCN CEC in the ECARO region will be part of a panel to discuss the linkages between human wellbeing and sustainable development. Finally, I need to reiterate that it is important for me, for us as a Commission, to know each other more.
