BIOPAMA Funding news #10 - 25 January 2021

In 2020, the BIOPAMA's grant-making facility has awarded 54 projects in 38 countries of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. 82 protected and conserved areas were awarded projects of a total amount of more than nine million Euros.

En 2020, le Fonds d'Action BIOPAMA a attribué 54 projets dans 38 pays de l'Organisation des États d'Afrique, des Caraïbes et du Pacifique. 82 aires protégées et conservées ont reçu du financemnt d'un montant total de plus de 9 millions d'euros.

Projects in the spotlight

On the occasion of the upcoming World Wetland Day, 2 February 2021, we put the spotlight on three projects in Cape Verde, Madagascar and Rwanda, that target actions on the ground in three Ramsar Sites, Wetlands of International Importance. #WorldWetlandsDay

Technical equipment to improve the protection of endangered loggerhead sea turtles on their nesting beaches

Grant type & budget: Small Technical Grant, 81,199 EUR

Where: Cape Verde, Curral Velho Ramsar Site, Wetland of International Importance, Reserva Natural Ponta do Sol, Reserva Natural Boa Esperanca, Reserva Natural da Tartaruga and Parque Natural do Norte

Who: Fundação Tartaruga Cabo Verde and Turtle foundation Germany

What: This project will implement activities to reduce poaching of endangered sea turtles on Boa Vista. The project will implement two new techniques aimed at better protecting sea turtles: Conservation Dogs and Night-Vision Drone. Both activities are designed to provide technical, logistical, and strategical support to the “Sea Turtle Surveillance Task Force” (STSTF) initiative, initiated by the Cape Verdean Ministry for Agriculture and Environment. The priority will be to improve patrol operations teams by the acquisition of field equipment and devices and training.

Enhancing biodiversity, livelihoods and climate change resilience through improved management of protected wetlands in Madagascar

Grant type & budget: Medium Grant, 432,885 EUR

Where: Madagascar, Lac Sofia, Ramsar Site, Wetland of International Importance

Who: Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), Durell Wildlife Conservation Trust (DWCT), Asity Madagascar (AM) and Organisation de soutien pour le development rurala Madagascar (OSDRM)

What: This project will strengthen the capacity of community associations to implement an agreed community based management plan at the Lake Sofia Ramsar Site and surrounding catchment. The project will also build capacity within Ramsar Site managers and the National Ramsar Committee (CONARAMS), providing a baseline of conservation management effectiveness through diagnostic tools.

Enhancing the role of local communities in the protection of Rugezi Marsh and its iconic Grey Crowned Cranes

Grant type & budget: Medium Grant, 332,037.64 EUR

Where: Rwanda, Rugezi Burera Ruhondo Ramsar Site, Wetland of International Importance

Who: Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association

What: This project will implement a range of activities to address conservation problems, while engaging and involving community members in the management and protection of the Marsh. RWCA will recruit and train additional Community Rangers at Rugezi Marsh to carry out patrols, report illegal activities, educate community members and monitor populations of Grey Crowned Cranes and breeding activities. Community campaigns and other educational events will be organised to raise awareness among community members about key conservation messages.

Apply for the current call for proposals by 29 January 2021 at 23:59 CET!

The call for proposals for Small Technical Grants for Assessment (STGA) is open until this Friday, 29 January at 23:59 CET (Brussels time). The purpose of BIOPAMA Small Technical Grants for Assessment (STGA) is to identify or update result-oriented priority actions for improved protected and conserved areas ‘management and governance, through new or updated quantified management and governance assessments and their associated enhancement plans. Upcoming funding opportunities

Two calls for proposals will be organised in 2021.
It is strongly recommended that all possible applicants for forthcoming BIOPAMA action component funding opportunities carry out a management and governance assessment that identifies such priorities for actions with associated enhancement plans. Only priorities identified by these decision-support tools will be eligible for funding for the calls to be organised in 2021.

L'appel pour les Petites Subventions Techniques pour Evaluations est ouvert jusqu’au 29 janvier 2021. L’objet des Petites Subventions Techniques pour Evaluations (PSTE) BIOPAMA est d’identifier et actualiser les priorités d’action visant des résultats pour une gestion et gouvernance améliorées des aires protégées et conservées, au travers d’évaluations quantifiées, nouvelles ou actualisées, de la gestion et gouvernance et de leur plan d’amélioration associés. Prochaines opportunités de financement

Deux appels à propositions seront organisés en 2021.

Nous recommandons fortement à tous les candidats potentiels de réaliser une évaluation de gestion et/ou de gouvernance qui identifie ces actions prioritaires, avec les plans d’amélioration associés afin de pleinement pouvoir accéder aux prochaines opportunités de financement du Fonds d'Action BIOPAMA. Seules les priorités identifiées par ces outils d’aide à la décision seront éligibles au financement pour les appels à subventions qui seront organisés en 2021.

The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) programme aims to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, in protected areas and surrounding communities. It is an initiative of the ACP Group of States financed by the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund (EDF), jointly implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC). Building on the first five years of activities financed by the 10th EDF, BIOPAMA’s second phase provides tools for data and information management, services for improving the knowledge and capacity for protected area planning and decision making, and funding opportunities for specific site-based actions. www.biopama.org
