Indigenous peoples have a unique relationship with nature that forms their cultural and spiritual identity, and supports their livelihoods. These communities act as stewards of nature and offer valuable traditional knowledge that contributes to conservation. At the 2016 World Conservation Congress, IUCN recognised the essential role of indigenous peoples in conservation by creating a special membership category for Indigenous Peoples’ Organisations. These new Members will take their seat at the table during the 2020 Congress in Marseille, which will also host the World Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nature. To mark the upcoming International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the following articles and interviews express views on conservation and indigenous peoples’ rights. |
