What a great year for PANORAMA. After the number of visitors had almost doubled from 2017 to 2018, PANORAMA again had only one direction to go in 2019: up high. So, the website visits almost doubled again from 2018 to 2019 and we had nearly 100,000 website visits last year. This upward trend can also be seen in the entries via search engines – these have even more than doubled in just one year.

In this new guidebook for monitoring the outcomes and impacts of Nature-based Solutions to climate change adaptation, PANORAMA could not be missing. This is a practical guide for planners and practitioners to better understand the outcomes and impacts of on-the-ground projects that work with and enhance nature to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on people (or ‘Ecosystem-based Adaptation’ (EbA). The global climate is rapidly changing, and there is a need for people across the planet to adapt to the negative impacts of such changes. That’s why understanding the outcomes of the interventions put in place and learning from good practice on climate adaptation is more important than ever.  

The current global Covid-19 pandemic shows once again how vulnerable human societies are to (human-animal) transmissible infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The megatrends of recent decades - globalisation, urbanisation, loss of biodiversity and climate change - have strongly contributed to the blazingly quick development of COVID-19 into a global pandemic.

The Ocean Week celebrations in June 2020 have highlighted the need for innovation and solutions for a healthy and more resilient ocean. In collaboration with Mission Blue, Blue Solutions aims to connect conservationists and practitioners for marine and coastal ecosystems to secure a sustainable future for our blue planet. During the online summit Blue Solutions introduced and promoted the 'solutioning approach' of PANORAMA which brings together conservation practitioners worldwide.

Young people in rural areas of El Triunfo, Mexico, do not have real development opportunities, most migrate or start a family at an early age. As they are within a biosphere reserve, environmental education groups come to these communities, with high transportation and logistics costs. The YAXCABÁ group is an alternative to the two challenges mentioned; On the one hand, it is a local group of young people who, through puppet theater, carry out environmental education and bring conservation stories to children and adults of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve in an efficient and effective way; and on the other, they offer a development alternative for young creative minds from the region.

More than ever, we need well-planned and -implemented EbA solutions that show how effective nature-based approaches are for human well-being! Here’s a great tool for you: In the high mountain regions of Central Asia, a systematic EbA planning method has been developed and applied based on the Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation. Within this method, identified dependencies and vulnerabilities, climate change information, and planning as well as monitoring of measures build on each other in a logical way. Together with local communities, innovative processes of climate change adaptation planning have been launched.

Every project creates new solutions, which might be published on PANORAMA. Often the incentive to write and upload solution proposals alone is missing. To address this, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH held a virtual Write-Shop in India as part of the project on biodiversity and ecosystem services in agrarian landscapes, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The Write-Shop supported the publishing of solutions and made PANORAMA better known.

Business and biodiversity platforms can provide a safe space for dialogue to help build trust between business and conservation actors, according to an IUCN-PANORAMA webinar held last week. These platforms also create new knowledge, tools and actions for the benefit of nature and society. A new IUCN report examining these platforms will be unveiled next week.  The webinar previews some of the key findings.

World Heritage places hold an Outstanding Universal Value which stems from local natural and cultural values linked to a diversity of stakeholders. Involving all stakeholders is critical for an effective conservation. The Nature-Culture Thematic Community will showcase people-centered solutions ranging from the northern Laponian Area World Heritage in Sweden to the southern Mosi-oa-Tunya/Victoria Falls, transboundary World Heritage from Zambia and Zimbabwe.
