The Earth’s forests, including rainforests, are home to more than 80% of the world’s terrestrial plant, animal, and insect species, making forest ecosystems key for biodiversity. They provide communities around the world with food, shelter, clean air, medicine, and livelihoods, and they play an important role in mitigating climate change by capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This vital part of our landscape is under threat from deforestation, climate change, and other natural and human factors. At the same time, 500 million hectares of degraded lands worldwide show potential for forest landscape restoration. The IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille will discuss key topics including forests, with over 400 sessions related to forest conservation, logging, and restoration. |
