Life on earth needs water for survival, yet the importance of freshwater ecosystems is often overlooked. Freshwater is critical for biodiversity and for providing communities with access to health and socio-economic services. According to the Living Planet Index, freshwater species are declining at more than twice the rate of terrestrial or marine species. Freshwater conservation and restoration will be a major theme discussed at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 in Marseille, France. |
